Oceanic - DVT Regulators Quality Alert

Dear Diver,

We were notified by Oceanic of a Quality Alert on the plunger used in the DVT assembly on Oceanic first stages.

The Quality Alert and affected DVT Plunger in no way poses a drowning hazard to the diver.

Issue: In late 2012 manufacturing changed from a machined DVT plunger to an injection molded plunger. The change reduced the manufacturing cost of the part, and allowed for the use of different materials. The “translucent” plunger, which was used to produce of regulators and service kits from November 1, 2012 to May 14, 2013, was manufactured from a softer “translucent” material. While this material showed enhanced sealing properties during the qualification process, we received reports of the DVT plunger extruding during the tuning and testing phase of the assembly process.

Oceanic has verified that if the 2nd stage purge button is not held long enough, and first stage is only partially depressurized prior to removal from the tank, air coming from the instrument console could back fill into the first stage and could cause the softer DVT plunger to extrude.

Affect units: Any Oceanic regulator containing a DVT assembly manufactured between November 1, 2012 and May 14, 2013.

No Aeris regulators were manufactured using the softer “translucent” DVT plunger.

Both Oceanic annual service kits, containing the DVT plunger, manufactured between Nov 1, 2012 and May 14, 2013 were affected and need to be retrofitted. The date code on the kits is shown as (year/month/day), kits dated between 12/11/1 and 13/4/30 need to be retrofitted.

Solution: Manufacturing change the DVT plunger material to a similar material as used in the production of the original machined plunger.
