Information on Fiji

We are headed to Beqa Lagoon for a trip and would love to know if anyone has been there and their thoughts on it.

Shantaram
Beqa Diving

Yes! I did 5 days of diving there in early 2007. It is an absolutely incredible shark experience. No cage, and dozens of bull sharks, reef sharks, and the occasional tiger shark. It's not just sharks. There are rays, turtles, groupers, wrasse, and a crazy amount of tuna.

From what I remember, it was two dives a day, and both dives so so loaded with sea life it is hard to see what is what in the beginning. The dive masters are all locals from Beqa, and you need at least three of them per dive. Two of the dive masters are there to feed the sharks, and the third hovers about 10m above them to feed the smaller sea life. All three of them have big buckets filled with chopped up tuna, and chainmail gloves. When you first drop in, you will go down to 30m, and the dive masters will instruct you to lie on your stomach on some rocks where there is about a 1 foot wall of stones. All you do is hang out there and watch the show. The dive masters will position themselves about 3m in front of the group and start feeding. After about 10 minutes, you will come up to about 15m and be met by a ton of reef sharks. I had been diving in Fiji for 6 months, and I was blown away at the amount of them.

What was really amazing was how organized it all was. Not just the divers, but the sharks and sea life. They all knew what the deal was as soon as we got there, and they actually go into a line to get fed! I'm not kidding. The dive masters will only feed the sharks if they approach from a circular line that forms. The line moves counter-clockwise, and one by one they all get their chunks of tuna. Every now and then a shark will try to jump the line and come from the wrong direction. Uh uh. The dive masters actually put their hands on the sharks nose and redirect them to the line. It's bizarre and beautiful.

I just dug though some old dvds and found the video they made for me there. Definitely get one made for you if its still a service they offer. I will post mine on here asap.

Let me know how your trip was. Such a magic place Fiji.
